Trust and betrayal

Married in the real world, involved in the digital one

March 19, 2026

Is a virtual relationship cheating if you are married?

It functions as a second relationship. It is real enough to hide, to think about during the day, and to hurt to lose. The absence of a body does not make it nothing, and the common belief that it protects the marriage usually means it has removed the pressure that would have forced a real conversation.

It is usually phrased carefully. There is someone I talk to. It is not physical. Nothing has happened. My spouse does not know.

Every clause there is doing work. Let us take them honestly, because the people asking are not villains — they are usually lonely, and telling themselves something that has stopped being true.

What people tell themselves

“It is not real.” It is real enough to hide, real enough to think about during the day, and real enough that losing it would hurt. That is a relationship. The medium is a detail.

“Nothing has happened.” Something has happened. Hours of attention and disclosure have moved. The absence of a body does not make it nothing; it makes it a different kind of something.

“It is keeping my marriage together.” Occasionally people mean this sincerely — the outside relationship absorbs a need and reduces the pressure at home. What it actually does is remove the pressure that would have forced the real conversation. The marriage does not get repaired. It gets anaesthetised.

“My spouse would not understand.” Probably true. That is not a reason it is fine. It is a description of why it is a betrayal.

What is actually happening

Two things at once, and both are worth saying plainly.

Something in the marriage went unmet long before anyone opened a headset. That is real, and it usually is not one person’s fault.

And a second relationship is now being funded with attention, honesty and desire that used to belong to the first. The spouse is experiencing that loss without being told there is a reason for it. That is the specific cruelty of it — not the other person, but leaving someone to conclude they are simply less lovable than they used to be.

Family patterns underneath

A lot of this traces back further than the marriage. People who grew up watching a parent conduct a quiet second life, or watching two adults keep a peace by never saying the true thing, tend to reproduce the arrangement without ever choosing it.

Katherine’s Weight Of Dysfunction is a journal account of a woman in an abusive marriage, kept over eleven years and published so a reader might recognise their own situation in it. It is available on Amazon, and it is why this ground sits so close to the centre of the show.

The three roads

There are only three, and drifting is not one of them, though most people try it.

End the outside relationship and do the real work. Hardest, and the only one that leaves the marriage intact and honest.

Tell your spouse and let them choose. Frightening, and it restores something you have been taking from them: a say in their own life.

End the marriage. Sometimes the truthful answer. Doing it cleanly is kinder than a slow disappearance.

If you are the one who found out

Start with what to do the week after you find out. You do not have to decide anything this week.
